It is with pleasure that we profile Jairo "Jay" Acero as Horizon Tank Lines' Driver of the Quarter. "Jay's" journey into trucking did not come by the usual routes with which we are familiar. His story began in the South?South America!

Jay was born and spent his early years in Bogota, Columbia, South America. He went to school in Bogota through the end of his high school years. It was in 1965 that he came to the United States, settling in Boston, Mass. As a young man, he began driving in Boston part time for Goodwill Industries. From Goodwill, he progressed into moving freight and produce locally for First National Stores. Living in Boston in 1968, he married his wife, Grace.

At the age of 27, Jay joined the Marines. After his stretch in the military, he went back to Boston, and began driving for North American Van Lines. It was with North American that he became an Owner - Operator in 1979. He was then with North Am until 1989. In the early 80's he and his family had moved to Wilmington, NC, where he ultimately received the necessary schooling and began pulling tanks for Fleet. In that mixed experience he has brought to Horizon Tank Lines personal discipline and strong dedication.

Running a 1998 T-900 Series Kenworth, Jay receives high marks from his Terminal Manager as being a real worker. "He picks up one load, delivers it, and is on the phone to me asking what I need him to do next," comments Ty Stamm of the Wilmington Terminal. "He seems to really like what he does, and is a strong representative for Horizon. I can always count on him."

Although pass-time is not abundant in the Acero household, Jay enjoys gardening when he can. Grace says he raises wonderful tomatoes, squash and peas among other veggies. Grace and Jay also have two grown daughters, Tiffany who is in veterinary school, and Grace a registered nurse.

It is with pride and pleasure that Horizon Tank Lines salutes Jairo "Jay" Acero as our Driver of the Quarter. We look forward to a long and thriving relationship.
