Jerry and Marge Haines
Warren "Jerry" Haines
Every company has their most experienced driver, as well as their "youngest kid on the block." Logically, the other drivers fall somewhere in between. Warren, known as "Jerry" to all of us, is Horizon's most experienced. His trucking career began around 1947, when he started work for United Van Lines. That portion of Jerry's history took him coast to coast for 30 years, until 1977. In 1977 he decided to change the direction of his work somewhat, and went to work for Kenan Transport. At that time, Kenan was so enthused about Jerry coming aboard, they made arrangements on Thanksgiving Day for him to undergo his physical, enabling him to load within 24 hours!
While Jerry was with Kenan, he achieved multiple driving awards, including several million miles without an accident. For those of you unfamiliar with outstanding driving records, to achieve a million miles accident-free is a benchmark. To achieve 2 to 3 million miles is almost unheard of, but to exceed that is stellar! Proudly, Jerry's record holds to this day!
Jerry decided to retire when he hit 62, giving him and his wife Marge time to take trips to visit children and grandchildren. Only 10 months into "retirement," he informed Marge he'd had enough, and was going to go back to work. True to his word, he returned to tank-trucks, going to work for Infinger in Leland, NC. He worked for Infinger until 1994 when he heard of a new company in town, Horizon Tank Lines. With encouragement from his eldest son, Leonard Haines, Jerry signed on as one of the first drivers for Horizon.
As mentioned before, awards are nothing new to Warren "Jerry" Haines. In 1996 he earned the "Driver of the Year" award with Horizon Tank Lines. Several criteria have to be met to earn this award; on-time delivery, customer satisfaction, complete and correct paperwork, attention to detail and overall cooperation are just a few points. Jerry meets these points, and then some. How he has earned respect in this profession is no secret. His attention to detail and concern for his customers is well known.
Jerry and his family originally moved to North Carolina from New York state over 20 years ago. He and his wife Marge live in Rocky Point, North Carolina. They have 3 children, Leonard, Sharon and Donald. There are 11 grandchildren now, and 14 great-grandchildren! The family is now spread around State College, PA and Elmira, NY.
Jerry spends his leisure time doing carpentry work in a large workshop. Marge says Jerry has added a screened porch, wishing well, gazebo and deck onto their Rocky Point home. He even manages to occasionally hit the greens for a game of golf.
Marge and Jerry have achieved numerous benchmarks of their own?they will celebrate their 53rd anniversary in December this year. Together they were also recently baptized into the Baptist Faith.
Although there are many miles behind Jerry, there are many more ahead. It is with a great deal of pride and respect that we salute Warren "Jerry" Haines as our Driver of the Month for Auguest, 1998!
