Fall is approaching, and with it we tend to look with amazement over the last eight months. How can 1998 have come so far without our noticing? What happened to spring and summer? What have we thus far accomplished? Oh, that's the easy part! Enter our featured driver, Henry D. Jacobs.

Henry is a maze of diversity. He, was raised, and now lives in Bolton, North Carolina. The Jacobs family has been in farming, trucking and similarly heavy equipment for over 28 years. Henry attended school in Hallsboro, North Carolina and finished with 1-? years of college. Interestingly enough, his major was computer science. I was surprised he would have abandoned a promising career in the computer field to turn to heavy equipment and trucking. "There was illness in my family, and I needed to come back to help out," was Henry's answer to my query. That DIDN'T surprise me. It is very much his nature to "do whatever it takes" when the situation dictates.

With no hesitation when asked what came first in his life, Henry said "The Lord and my sons." Henry is a single dad, who looks forward to time with his two boys. Adam is the youngest at age four, and older brother Eddy is nine. The boys' time is shared between parents, so every hour Henry has with the two is precious. Sometimes scheduling time at home becomes a challenge because of his profession in transportation, but Henry manages to succeed.

Church life has always been an integral part of the Jacobs family, so Henry told me about his upbringing in the Mt. Sinai Holiness Church. He and his family have belonged to the church all their lives. Because some Sundays are necessarily spent over-the-road, his close-knit church group is very important. This extended family helps keep Henry close to home [even while hundreds of miles away], and safe. "It's the only way," he commented.

Henry is also very proud of his truck. Of the four trucks owned by his dad, Howard, Henry drives the 1996 Freightliner. The big, blue long-nose sports a 470 hp Detroit engine, a "double 9 over" Eaton, with 3:91 rears. Henry keeps his truck as neat and presentable as he does himself. Henry's dad, Howard, once told me that he [Howard] dresses and presents himself as a professional businessman as much as possible. "When you are pulled over at a set of scales for a spot inspection, looking and acting the part of a clean-cut, professional driver never hurts, you know." For the Jacobs', this is never an "act." Even when Henry is hurried and harried, he maintains his professionalism. It's all part of his upbringing and heritage.

It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that Horizon Tank Lines spotlights Henry Jacobs as our Profiled Driver. His enthusiasm and energy are part and parcel of what helped name him Runner-Up Driver of the Year for 1997. At this rate, who knows what the conclusion of 1998 will bring?

Congratulations Henry! We're very proud to have you aboard Horizon!
